As people are becoming more aware of nutrient deficiencies affecting their health, there are certain 'buzzwords' or 'popular' deficiencies that people are talking about. Vitamin D being the most popular, particular here in England where we have been so missing the sun!!
Magnesium is another popular deficiency that many people self diagnose, and with good reason! A lack of magnesium is linked to all kinds of health problems. Here are my top eight symptoms that suggest you might be a little low on your magnesium quota:
1. 'Brain fog'
Brain fog or slow cognitive processing is the first obvious sign that you are low on magnesium. Struggling to concentrate? Always forgetting where you put your keys? Heading upstairs and then forgotten why? Low magnesium levels might be the reason.
In fact, supplementing magnesium regularly has been proven to improve ability to learn and memory recall, so get your teens on some before their exams!!
2. Headaches and migraines

Magnesium helps to regulate calcium levels in the brain, reduces the frequency and intensity of migraines, and has a similar effect on non-migraine headaches too. If you get headaches on a fairly regular basis, you should look into supplementation.
3. IBS and constipation
Although there are many factors that affect our gut motility and microflora, magnesium draws water into the bowels and makes stools softer and easier to pass. Make sure you are drinking plenty of water too though!
Magnesium also helps to regulate muscle contractions, which are vital for moving food through the digestive tract.
4. Fatigue
The mitochondrion in your cells are heavily reliant on magnesium to produce energy for your body. If you are feeling tired constantly, magnesium might be to blame.
5. Insomnia
Magnesium supplementation helps the body to produce GABA, a neurotransmitter that helps you to relax. In fact, better sleep is one of the first things clients tend to notice when they are supplementing magnesium.

6. Muscle spasms and cramps
This includes menstrual cramps for women, and restless leg syndrome for everyone. This cramps can be frustrating and irritating, particularly at night. Magnesium oil can help relax the muscles.
7. Numbness and tingling
Numbness and tingling should always be checked out by a doctor (unless you just moved and your legs have temporarily gone to sleep!) as it can be caused by underlying conditions such as diabetic neuropathy. It can also just be a magnesium deficiency though, or both!
8. Mood disorders
As I mentioned before, magnesium is vital for creating GABA, but also other neurotransmitter's that the body needs to relax. Without GABA, or at least with low levels of it, we start to see conditions like ADHD/ADD, anxiety, irritability and other mood disorders.
We can sometimes combat these with emotional aromatherapy, but long term, the solution is to address the deficiency.
Do you have some or all of the above symptoms? You're most likely deficient in magnesium and potentially some other key minerals.
